(Turkey) Sculptures -조각 본문
Sculptures
Because of the Islamic belief held by the Turks, sculptures, like paintings, were not permitted to depict images of humans. Sculptures started developing only after 1923, when the republic of Turkey was established. During this period, Professor Osgan, an Armenian professor in the Academy of Fine Arts, started to make many sculptures of Ataturk and other memorial statues. The first statue to be made after the establishment of the Republic was that of Ataturk. In 1925, the Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel (1883-1945) was commissioned by the Turkish government to make many monuments.
