When Buildings Become Symbols 본문
When Buildings Become Symbols The Getty Center |
Illuminated manuscripts offer some of the best records of medieval architecture's soaring cathedrals and grand castles. The built environment permeated life in the Middle Ages, and artists manipulated the forms of buildings in their illuminations to tell stories and to convey the meaning of these impressive structures to the people who lived within and around them. Christine Sciacca, assistant curator, Department of Manuscripts, the J. Paul Getty Museum, discusses how illuminators transformed magnificent places of worship and princely palaces into symbols of grandeur, power, and even heaven on earth. This talk complements the exhibition Building the Medieval World: Architecture in Illuminated Manuscripts.
