Osman Hamdi.  

 

Osman Hamdi drew up the founding regulations of the Academy of Fine Arts (Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi) and became its first director in 1883. Osman Hamdi, museum curator and an archaeologist contributed to the Academy's remarkable development. In its very first year, the Academy of Fine Arts had 20 students and some teaching staffs from Turkey, as well as Andre Lhote and Leopold Levy from Germany.

 

 

Turkish painters of 19th century painted landscapes and still life with success. Influenced by Millet, Courbet(1819-1877) and the painters of Barbizon, the pioneers of Turkish painting confined themselves to a faithful representation of nature. But good portrait painters were rare. There was a complete separation from the Eastern tradition of art that had prevailed up to the 19th century as Modern Turkish painting was born.
