Reference [Art Critic : Lee Kyung Mo’s Review]
Kim Yeon-ok has been searching for the possibility of a new communication, by bridging the gap with traditional motifs and timely criticism, in her own work, in which formal completeness was achieved. With a personal work style which is to attach folded cotton cloth at regular intervals and master the craftsman’s efforts. The artist has the strategy to overcome the limitation of modernism paintings, by tracking the essence of objects with a constant work process, and who experiments with adding content elements and material. This strategy has obtained sympathy of many people. Kim Yeon-ok was an alchemist who raised the vulgar value to the level of sublimity, by reconfiguring life and the desire of modern people through; a proper harmony of a Korea-like image in memory, the archtype of circular form with interest elements of modern people, and physical property of media. For exploration about the circular form in the process of the work, the artist would have been immersed in a variety of spatio-temporal experiences, starting at one point and encompassing the universe. It is close to an unconscious experience rather than hallucination. The artist drives experience into the realm of existential life, to specify everyday life as the subject of aesthetic desire. The circular pattern, appearing on the extension of Kim Yeon-ok’s art work, may be derived from a universal unconsciousness. Upon considering the painting, as a target of thinking, in which sense and emotion are felt. Even though it is the visual target, the artists hopes that the art work becomes; the place of empathy of inner reality, to read the flow of time, story, meaning, and even the question about the existence. Moreover, the artist has shown the intention to develop the shape of pottery, which is the symbol of circular form, into a more patterned form overcoming the unclear painting property with a variety of format experiments. Her art, where traditional drawing, spraying, and piece work are done in parallel, has a layered structure which is the product of numerous trials and errors, and overcomes the process, in which various techniques representative of modern paintings are applied. Nevertheless, Kim Yeon-ok hides the narrative of art, by representing only relief characteristics and a concise image, appearing to the outside rather than the in-depth format of the work itself. In the <Gyeop> series work, representing pottery, we can read the artist’s deep affection for objects and artistic anxieties, and attempts to reproduce it and be above this world at the same time. It must be derived from the circular form, but it is valued as one of the universals, and has the value of encompassing, human beings, life, nature, and the universe, as well as not being designated as an evolving as an artistic target. Kim Yoen-ok’s work is laborious and does not give up painting purity and absoluteness for the exploration of modern form, and experiments with materials, in terms of format. In terms of contents, the meaning of existence and the secret of the universe, are represented through Korea’s traditional motifs. Eventually the artist is carrying out new artists experiments, which are to be understood as existential place as well as the place of modern experiment, by giving a glimpse of history of simple shapes in temporal places, consisting of multiple horizontal layers.
